Psiloritis

Psiloritis — or Ida, as it was called by the ancients — is the highest peak of Crete, standing at 2,456 meters, and one of the most iconic mountains in all of Greece. The Municipality of Mylopotamos extends along its northwestern slopes, offering unique access to this imposing landscape with thousands of years of history.
Psiloritis is not simply a mountain. It is the place where — according to mythology — Zeus was raised in the Idaean Cave, the place where shepherds and mountaineers encounter the traces of a civilization thousands of years old. Today, the Psiloritis Natural Park — recognized by UNESCO — welcomes visitors seeking nature, history, and an authentic experience.
What to Explore
Idaean Cave
One of the most important sanctuaries of antiquity is located on the Nida Plateau, at an altitude of 1,498 meters. According to mythology, Zeus was born and raised here. Excavations have brought to light important Minoan finds — votive offerings, pottery, and bronze objects — proving the continuous use of the site as a sanctuary from the Minoan period through to Roman times.
Nida Plateau
At an altitude of 1,400 meters, the Nida Plateau is the largest mountain plateau in Crete and the starting point for the summit. Traditional mitata still operate here — cheese-making huts — where visitors can experience the centuries-old art of livestock farming up close and taste fresh mountain dairy products.
Zominthos – A Minoan Palace in the Mountains.
At an altitude of 1,187 meters, Zominthos is a unique archaeological discovery: a Minoan building complex at an elevation found nowhere else. Excavations — which continue to this day — reveal a multi-storey building with dozens of rooms, frescoes, and objects from everyday Minoan life.
Ascent to the Summit
The ascent to Timios Stavros (2,456 m) is the ultimate experience for hikers. The most popular route starts from the Nida Plateau and takes approximately 5 hours. At the summit, the view embraces the whole of Crete — the northern and southern coasts at the same time.

- Season: May–October for the ascent to the summit.
- Starting point: Nida Plateau (22 km from Anogeia).
- Ascent duration: Approximately 5 hours from Nida — 5 hours return.
- Essentials: Water, warm clothing, hiking shoes, GPS or map.
- Access to the Idaean Cave: Drivable road to Nida, followed by a 15-minute walk.
