Arkadi, Bali, Vosakos - Places of Faith, History, and Beauty<br/>

Mylopotamos is a land of deep faith and spiritual history. Its monasteries and churches are not merely places of worship — they are guardians of a history that spans centuries of resistance, sacrifice, and culture. Built on hills overlooking the sea, amidst pine forests, or on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis, the monasteries of Mylopotamos are an integral part of the region’s identity.

From the Arkadi Monastery — a European Monument of Freedom — to the small chapels built on rocky slopes, every religious site in Mylopotamos hides a story worth hearing.

Monasteries

Arkadi Monastery – European Monument of Freedom

The Arkadi Monastery is undoubtedly the most sacred place in all of Crete. Built at an altitude of 500 meters, surrounded by olive groves and pine trees, the Monastery impresses with the exceptional architecture of its facade — a 16th-century masterpiece of the Cretan Renaissance. In November 1866, 964 Cretans — fighters, women, and children — chose death over surrender to the Ottomans by blowing up the gunpowder magazine. This sacrifice shocked Europe. Today, the Monastery is active and welcomes visitors throughout the year.

Attali Monastery (Bali)

The Attali Monastery — also known as the Bali Monastery — is located on the slopes of the Holy Obedience (Agia Ypakoi) hill, west of Bali, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and the bay. Founded in 1635, it is one of the most picturesque monasteries in the area. The image of the Monastery overlooking the blue waters of Bali is one of the most iconic sights of Mylopotamos.

Vosakos Holy Cross Monastery

Hidden in a small plateau between the Koutroulis and Mesokofinas peaks of the Talean Mountains, 50 km east of Rethymno, the Vosakos Monastery is a place of peace and devotion. Access is through the village of Doxaro, and the route itself is exceptionally beautiful. It is ideal for those seeking isolation and spiritual uplifting.

Halepa Monastery of the Savior

Built on a high hill near Tachiana and Veni, the Halepa Monastery has been fully restored in recent decades. The panoramic view of the Mylopotamos valley from here is spectacular — a reason in itself to make the climb.

Churches of Anogeia

Anogeia, the most famous mountainous village of Mylopotamos, hosts several historic churches and chapels harmoniously integrated into the mountain landscape. The village, which was burned twice — by the Germans in 1944 — kept its churches as symbols of resistance and reconstitution.

Saint Anthony of Patsos Chapel

Inside the Patsos Gorge, built right into the rock face, the chapel of Saint Anthony is one of the most charming chapels in the area. A visit here is naturally combined with the trek through the gorge.
