Gorges & Paths

Patsos, Arkadi, E4 - unique hiking routes for every level

Mylopotamos is a land of contrasts: where the sea crashes against the rocks, just a few kilometers above open up deep gorges, dense forests, and trails that ascend all the way to the 2,456 meters of Mount Psiloritis. The Geropotamos valley crosses the municipality from south to north, the gorges of Arkadi and Patsos invite the hiker, and the European Trail E4 passes through the slopes of Psiloritis.

From easy family routes alongside streams to demanding mountain ascents for experienced mountaineers — Mylopotamos has a trail for every step.

Routes & Gorges

🟢 Easy – Arkadi Gorge

Right next to the Arkadi Monastery opens up the picturesque Arkadi Gorge. An easy, romantic route under plane trees, with streams and rocks forming a cool landscape. Ideal to combine with a visit to the Monastery — a perfect half-day trip for all ages.

  • Difficulty: Easy — Suitable for children
  • Duration: 1-2 hours
  • Starting Point: Arkadi Monastery Parking Lot

🟢 Easy – Patsos Gorge (St. Anthony)

The Patsos Gorge, near the village of the same name, is one of the most beautiful and accessible gorges in the province. Inside the gorge, there is a small chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony, built into the rocky cliffside. Waterfalls, lush green vegetation, and untouched nature make this route a unique experience.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Duration: 1.5–2.5 hours
  • Highlight: Saint Anthony’s Chapel in the rock

🟡 Moderate – Geropotamos Valley

Geropotamos crosses the entire Mylopotamos region from the foothills of Mount Psiloritis to the sea. The route along the valley passes through olive groves, villages, and dense Mediterranean vegetation, offering a deep experience of the rural life of Mylopotamos.

  • Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
  • Season: All year round – ideal in spring & autumn

🟡 Moderate — European Trail E4 (Psiloritis section)

The E4, the longest European hiking trail, crosses Crete from west to east. The section that passes through Mylopotamos — from Anogeia or Nida towards the summit — is one of the most impressive: mountainous landscapes, rare flora, panoramic views, and the feeling of walking along ancient pathways.

  • Difficulty: Moderate-Difficult
  • Season: April-October
  • Starting Point: Anogeia or Nida

🔴 Difficult – Mount Psiloritis Summit Ascent

The ultimate challenge: ascending to Timios Stavros (Holy Cross) at 2,456 meters. From the Nida Plateau, the trail climbs through rocky terrain and alpine meadows, reaching the summit with incredible views and the small chapel that has stood there for centuries. It requires good physical condition and proper equipment.

  • Difficulty: Difficult — Requires mountaineering experience
  • Duration: Approximately 5 hours ascent + 4 hours descent
  • Season: May-October (check for snow conditions)
