Eleutherna, Axos, Melidoni, Zominthos — 4,000 years of history.

Mylopotamos is a land with a history that stretches back into the depths of time. The first humans settled here as early as the Neolithic period — 5,000 years ago — and the civilizations that followed one another left behind an impressive archaeological footprint. Ancient cities built on hills with panoramic views, caves with a thousand-year history of worship, and palatial complexes high in the mountains.

Mylopotamos is not simply a tourist destination — it is an open-air archaeological museum that you explore on foot, discovering a new chapter of human history at every turn.

Notable Sites

Ancient Eleutherna

Eleutherna was one of the most powerful city-states of ancient Crete. Built on a strategic hill, 23 km southeast of Rethymno, the city flourished greatly from the 9th to the 7th century BC. Systematic excavations by the University of Crete have brought to light an impressive necropolis, statues, and jewelry. The modern Archaeological Museum of Eleutherna in the village presents the findings in an exemplary way.

Ancient Axos

Axos was one of the most important cities of ancient Crete, with a history dating back to the Pre-Minoan period. Along the landscaped archaeological walk of the acropolis, the ruins of the city are revealed, while an Archaic inscription written in boustrophedon script was found here — one of the oldest known collective labor agreements! Next to the acropolis lies the site of “Ellinospita,” with an extensive cemetery.

Melidoni Cave – Gerontospilios

It is not only an impressive cave with stalactites and stalagmites — it is also a place of deep historical significance. A place of worship since the Neolithic period, dedicated to Hermes and the giant Talos, the cave is also connected to one of the most tragic pages of Cretan history: in 1823, 370 Cretans met a tragic death here at the hands of the Ottomans. Today, it houses an ossuary in the central chamber.

Zominthos

At an altitude of 1,187 meters on Psiloritis, Zominthos is a unique archaeological discovery: a Minoan palatial complex located higher than any other known Minoan building. Ongoing excavations reveal a multi-storey building with frescoes, storage vessels, and objects that shed light on the life of the Minoans in the mountains.

Sfendoni Cave of Zoniana

One of the largest caves in Crete, with 14 chambers filled with impressive cave formations. It is located near the village of Zoniana and is one of the largest speleological attractions in the region.
